Stephen Wilkes x Day To Night x Four Seasons, Central Park

This is the third Day to Night photograph in Stephen Wilkes' Four Seasons series, capturing the dramatic shifts of nature in Central Park as seen from one of the highest vantage points above New York City.

"Photographing fall in Central Park from this elevation posed a unique challenge: timing. The leaves don’t all change at once, and New York’s unpredictable weather only adds to the complexity. This year the foliage arrived later than usual, stretching the waiting game even further. I had to wait patiently for the precise moment when the park was at its most vibrant—when deep greens gave way to golden yellows, fiery reds, and rich ambers. It took weeks of careful monitoring, tracking weather patterns and foliage reports, to land on just the right day.

The view from this location is unlike any other—like being in a plane hovering over Manhattan, but without the rush. Here, I could take it all in slowly, for hours at a time, watching the colors evolve as the city transitioned from day into night."
