Stephen Wilkes Shoots Day to Night™ "In America: Remember" at the National Mall in Washington DC for National Geographic

Stephen Wilkes spent 30 hours capturing more than 4,000 still images to create a Day To Night™ photograph for National Geographic of “In America: Remember”, a public installation at the National Mall. Created by Suzanne Firstenberg, the installation consists of over 670,000 white flags for every life in America lost to COVID-19 thus far.

Stephen strategically shot the scene from above, with the sun rising over the National Museum of African American History and Culture to honor the people of color who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Seeing the installation from up high gives one a big picture perspective of just how many lives have been collectively lost. As much as it is an image of mourning and reflection, it is  also an image of hope and coming together.
